Knowledge Ontario - Funding Needed from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture

By Info Diva

ADVERTISEMENTS
I'm taking a break from my vacation (which I am largely spending off-line) to bring something I feel is urgent to your attention. This is particularly directed to citizens of Ontario:

Are you familiar with Knowledge Ontario? They do work behind the scenes to support the information needs of Ontarians by providing a wide range of services to Ontario's public, academic and school libraries, schools, and other learning and cultural organizations.

Up until last year they were primarily financed by the Ontario government through the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. In 2008 they were identified in the Newman report commissioned by the former Ministry of Culture  as a key to advancing Ontario's interests and priorities--including innovation--in the knowledge-based economy through to 2020. (See: Newman, Wendy. Third Generation Public Libraries- Visionary Thinking and Service Development in Public Libraries (to 2020) and Potential Application in Ontario. Report for the Ontario Ministry of Culture, 2008).  I did some work with KO last year, and got to see up close the work they do and how much of an impact it has.

Unfortunately in the most recent provincial budget, they did not receive funding from the Ontario government for the future. To me there is a huge disconnect here because they are one of the few organizations working to help bring online information access to people across the province, including our rural citizens who have limited access to the Internet. In less than three years they went from being a key element for helping us succeed in the knowledge-based economy to not being seen as having a role at all by the Ontario government. How is that possible?!

And meanwhile the federal government has been working towards figuring out a strategy for the digital economy. To me Knowledge Ontario fits into the bigger picture. I just don't understand how the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture cannot see this, cannot find a way to support this organization. Especially when they are still being touted on the Ministry's website as a solution. It really concerns me that our provincial government could be so myopic when it comes to spending our tax monies.

I hope you will join me in putting some pressure on the Ministry. It would be a real shame for all of us if Knowledge Ontario does not receive the support it needs.
