Non-contingency

ADVERTISEMENTS
Last night I dreamed that JW and I moved across the country, went to grad school and got jobs, and planned our lives around each other. Just like we did in real life. But in my dream, we didn't get married. We broke up. I felt completely at sea. I had no idea what to do with myself.

I am a planning-for-contingencies kind of girl. I have thought, fairly extensively, about what I would do if JW died. I've even given some thought to what we would do if, God forbid, K died before us. But since the day he proposed, it has never once crossed my mind that JW and I would separate voluntarily. It surprised me to realize that, even in the corner of my brain that's always thinking, "What if my firm revokes my offer? What if somebody pops out from behind that bush and throws a ninja star at me?" that has never seemed like even a remote possibility.

I blame my legal writing professor, who assigned us to write a prenup.
