Republican vs. Democrat

By attorneydavid

ADVERTISEMENTS
A dissappearing distinction to a Memphis lawyer.

Once upon a time, there were two political parties with differing philosophies on governance within the United States. That has changed into two political parties with almost identical philosophies and radically different views on the functional make-up of reality.

Take global warming, you will be hard pressed to find a Republican who thinks nothing should be done about global warming if its about to cause wide-spread famine and flooding with the next decade or two. For any given subset of factual assumptions on this issue the spread over opinions on what needs to be done is far outshadowed by a widely divergent view of reality.

Take tort reform. No Democrat supports frivolous lawsuits. The difference in governance comes from a divergent view of the burden of lawsuits on society, which can be determined by any trained economist with a sufficient budget.

The only real and significant area of difference between the two at this point seems to be the abortion issue and possibly affirmative action, though it seems as though both sides are in favor of a gradual phaseout.

Everyone is in favor of education, lower taxes, controlled spending, a reasonable amount of social services, some basic level of social security, less corruption, and virtually every other material issue the differing views come down more to identifiable differences over reality rather than philosophy.
