: Thoughts from a Management LawyerNot a Labour Post - Unless By Labour We Mean Hard Work
By Michael Fitzgibbon
I just spent the past hour and a half riveted to NASA TV with my oldest son as the Phoenix Mars Lander made its way towards Mars and to a successful landing pretty much right on target.
It's early days and there's plenty that can go wrong, but seeing as how the spacecraft made it to the surface in one piece (so far) after its "twin" (Mars Polar Lander,) crashed into the planet in 2001 resulting in a serious redesign and change in strategy, this is quite something. The creativity, ingenuity, talent and single-minded effort that goes into a project of this nature is truly impressive and difficult to fathom. The anxiety in mission control was evident and shows how much people on the team had invested in this project and how much they cared about the success of the mission, rather than any individual accolades that might come with that. Interesting lesson in that.
Of note is that the Canadian Space Agency contributed the $37 million for one of the instruments, a weather station. And if you want to be an astronaut, I see the CSA is recruiting. I see they aren't looking for lawyers (Insert punch line here).
