: TJ's Double PlayRemember, Jaeger bombs don't count
With the 20 degree weather here, we've been reminiscing on the weekends we spent by the pool last summer, indulging in "Sangria Sundays." It looks like we'll have to get back to Texas before we can do that again.
It's illegal to serve sangria in Virginia.
The fruity cocktail of wine and brandy that is a must-have at Spanish restaurants violates a law that forbids mixing wine or beer with spirits. If convicted, a bartender could go to jail for a year.
Even worse, the law doesn't ban sangria specifically.
Since 1934, just after the national prohibition of alcohol was repealed, Virginia has had laws that prohibit mixing wine or beer with spirits and pre-mixing a drink with alcohol.
That means everytime you order an Irish car bomb you're subjecting the bartender to a year in jail (Although, technically they serve the whisky and Guinness separately . . .). We'd get upset and write a letter, but we've been hitting the Pink Panty Droppers pretty hard and our roommate just poured some Flaming Dr Peppers so . . . that'll have to wait.
