: Philip Brooks’ Patent Infringement UpdatesJudge Affirms SiRF's Patent Infringement
By Philip Brooks
The following is excerpted from an August 12, 2008 article at EE Times Asia:
The pending case whether SiRF has infringed some patents of Broadcom Corp. is over. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has ruled that SiRF Technology Holdings Inc. has infringed six patents related to improving GPS processing and sensitivity. The patents are under the custody of Global Locate Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Broadcom. The Initial Determination containing the infringement articles followed a trial earlier this year. A Final Determination by the full six-person Commission will be prepared by early December.
The infringement findings include an array of SiRF products, covering the SiRFstarIII and SiRFInstant GPS architectures.
Carl Charneski, administrative law judge, ITC, ruled in favor of Broadcom based on an earlier June ruling by another ITC judge, who dumped SiRF's allegations that two patents have been infringed by Broadcom.
