Record year for corporate deal makers at KC law firm Stinson Morrison. KC Business Journal.Corporate attorneys at Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP served as lead counsel or co-counsel on more than $77 billion worth of corporate finance transactions in 2007, a dollar tally that's probably a record for the Kansas City-based firm.
"I'm sure it is," said John Granda, chairman of the firm's corporate finance division. The deals Stinson helped broker ranged from mergers to venture capital transactions for companies as diverse as Great Plains Energy Inc. (NYSE: GXP) to Arizona-based investment banking company Stockmen's Bancorp. Granda said the uptick in the firm's work in corporate transactions is due in part to the corporate lawyers the firm has as well as the value proposition for companies that have eschewed the leaping hourly rates on coastal firms. "New York firms have gotten increasingly expensive," Granda said. "People are feeling like a lot more things can get done in the Midwest." Among the transactions Stinson lawyers worked in 2007 included Mission Hills-based natural resource company Layne Christensen Co. (Nasdaq: LAYN)'s $169 million public offering of common stock in October and the merger of a pair of gas companies -- Oklahoma City-based Quest Resource Corp. and Wyoming-based Pinnacle Gas Resources Inc. -- to form a combined entity with $450 million in market capitalization.
