Some of the dozens of shareholder suits filed recently against companies like Lehman and AIG have been temporarily frozen. And defense attorneys anticipate that plaintiffs could have a hard time blaming specific companies and individuals for what could be viewed as uncontrollable economic forces."

Veterans' appeals court may get boost
"Heeding a steady drumbeat of concern about a skyrocketing caseload unlikely to decrease as two wars continue, Congress is moving toward providing help to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans' Claims. The Senate recently passed an omnibus veterans' benefits measure that includes provisions increasing temporarily the number of judges on the court and eliminating the time limits on retired CAVC judges' service."

Women debate cause, size of pay gap
"The gender pay gap has always been a sore subject bubbling near the surface of law firms across the nation. Now it has boiled over the top. A recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that women lawyers still earn far less than their male counterparts. The statistic didn't surprise anyone, but that didn't stop it from triggering a fresh round of debate on scores of blogs and within women's legal circles."

Foreign investment rules altered
"Lawyers expect the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control's new enforcement guidelines concerning illegal foreign investments and transactions to boost the office's sanctions and expand corporate compliance with the rules. The idea is to curtail investments in countries and regimes that foster terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and narcotics trafficking. But the office, which acts under the U.S. president's national emergency powers and legislation, has broad authority to restrict investment in any country if the restriction furthers U.S. foreign policy and national security goals".

FLORIDA

Lawyers are lined up in election 'ground zero'
"The presidential campaign staffs of Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain have lined up a small army of attorneys in Florida to work through Election Day, making sure that nothing goes wrong in what is once again a key battleground state. With the race a nearly dead heat this year in the Sunshine State, both sides are making sure they have adequate legal muscle lined up to bone up, fan out on Election Day and be prepared in case litigation is necessary afterward."
