For a hiring edge, associates should think international
"In order to better serve the global needs of their clients, firms are increasingly offering opportunities for young lawyers to gain experience working overseas. In 2005, DLA Piper put in a component in its summer program that calls for about 10% of the class to spend about two weeks in places ranging from London to Beijing, said Benjamin S. Boyd, the firm's national hiring partner. The current economic turmoil illustrates the importance of having lawyers who are willing to work globally, Boyd said.'

FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE

Amid cuts, firms insist they're growing
"Even as large Chicago law firms are pushing some lawyers out the door, they say they're growing by hiring new attorneys. Just before news broke last week that Sonnenschein planned to cut 25 lawyers, the firm announced the prior week that it was opening a Zurich office with two new partners and the prior month that it was expanding its patent litigation team with two new lawyers in Palo Alto, California. While Jenner & Block cut 10 partners in recent weeks, managing partner Susan Levy is adamant that her firm is 'still growing.' Loyola latest to offer dual degree, with a twist: J.D. and tax LL.M.
"Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, will provide a joint J.D. and tax LL.M. program next year, the first of its kind in the nation, according to the law school. The joint program, anticipated to start during the fall of 2009, allows students to earn a J.D. and tax LL.M. master's degree in three years
the amount of time it normally takes to complete a J.D. program. In contrast, most tax LL.M. master's degrees require that students complete another year of law school."

WEB-ONLY

Fate of mold-ridden federal courthouse
once Noriega's jail
is up for grabs
The mold-ridden, historic David W. Dyer Federal courthouse in downtown Miami could be put on the auction block. The General Services Administration, which owns all federal courthouses, said a study is under way to determine the feasability and cost of renovating the building. After the study is completed, GSA will then decide whether to renovate the courthouse or to sell it. But any plan to sell the building would likely be met with resistance and even outrage from some in the Miami legal community.

Firms learn a lesson on being candid about layoffs
"Clifford Chance's latest round of attorney layoffs was supposed to unfold according to a carefully choreographed sequence of events. Law firm leaders spent a month developing a plan for how to tell 20 associates that they were being let go, and how to break the bad news to the rest of the firm and the media. But information is difficult to control in the Internet age, and rumors of the layoffs hit the popular legal gossip blog Above the Law before the firm was prepared to release a statement."

WEB-ONLY

Vagueness of Maryland's flexible leave act is making some lawyers dizzy
"A new Maryland law that lets employees lump together any unused paid leave days, including vacation, sick or comp days, to care for an ill family member has employers in a state of confusion. FCC's NASCAR sponsorship triggers an interesting legal hypothetical
"As part of its digital television (DTV) outreach effort, the Federal Communications Commission, in a somewhat unorthodox approach, is sponsoring the NASCAR No. 38 entry with driver David Gilliland in three races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The FCC paid $350,000 for its DTV ad to appear on Gilliland's driving suit and Ford racer hood. The money is part of a federal grant to educate the public about the transition to DTV."

WEB-ONLY
