Where were you when??

ADVERTISEMENTS
Since tomorrow is likely to be one of the biggest days in modern American history, no matter what the outcome of the election is, I thought that this "where were you when" meme was a somewhat appropriate meme as I'm sure the question "where were you when Obama/McCain won the 2008 election?" will be added to the list come wednesday morning.

Night Berlin Wall Came Down- November 9, 1989
I don't remember this event specifically, but I remember a conversation I had with my father the next day. I saw something on the news about the wall coming down, and since I was 4 years old I was confused as to why people were tearing down the bricks on TV, I had been taught to be nice to other people's things and to not destroy lego walls built by my pre-school classmates. I remember my dad explaining to me that this was different than legos, and that this wall was coming down to make the world a better place because freedom had won over evil. A little bit of hyperbole yes, but significant in my mind nonetheless.

O.J. verdict (the infamous first one)- October 3, 1995
This should have been a sign at an early age that I was destined to be a lawyer. I was at school (6th grade) and the principle came on over the intercom and told the entire school the verdict was not guilty. Half of the classroom cheered, the other half of us yelled in astonishment and defeat. I was in the defeat category, I had followed a pretty good amount of the trial for someone so young and I was totally convinced that he did it. (and I still am).

Princess Diana's death - August 31, 1997
I was in middle school (8th grade), and I was at home when the news came on early in the evening in my timezone to announce that Princess Di had been in a serious car crash. A few hours later, after somewhat non-stop coverage we learned she had died. I stayed up all night with my best friend at the time a week later to watch her funeral live on TV. My mom reminensed how she had stayed up years earlier to watch the big royal wedding.

Columbine High School Shootings- April 20, 1999
This is one day I'm never going to forget. I was in 9th grade at a high school about 3 miles away from Columbine. Several friends of mine were students at Columbine, all made it out okay, but for 15 terrifying hours we didn't know if they were okay. I was in English class when we heard the news, we were working on essays and a classmate of mine, who had left briefly to use the restroom, came bursting back into the room telling us to turn on the TV because there was a shooting at Columbine. We were glued to the TV for the rest of the school day until they forced us to go home, and I watched the non-stop coverage until my parents forced me to go to bed around 10pm.

September 11, 2001
Another day I will never forget. I was a senior in high school. I was a TA for sophomore biology and I had just walked the attendance for the class down to the main office. The TV was on in the office and everyone was gathered around. At the time it sounded like a small plane had accidently crashed into one of the towers. By the time my TA class was over we had watched the second plane hit.

Boston Red Socks end the curse, October 27, 2004
I was watching the game with my roommate and a few other friends at my college apartment. I've never been a baseball fan, but there was something totally cool about watching the Red Socks win their first series since 1918.

Michael Phelps breaks Mark Spitz's record, August 16, 2008/ August 17, 2008 (depending on if you were in Beijing or watching on TV)
I was plopped down on my couch glued to the TV for every heart stopping moment of the eight and final gold medal race. Although, the best drama of Phelp's run was definitely the 4x100 relay and the 100 fly.

I'm not going to tag anyone else to do this meme, but feel free to respond in the comments and/or steal this meme for your blog!

And I know I've said it several times already recently, but it's really important, please GO VOTE tomorrow if you haven't already done so!!!!
