: Legal Pad | LAFinal two Milberg defendants sentenced, judge calls it "a tragedy"
By Richard Binder
After an extensive nine-year probe, the last two defendants in the Milberg kickbacks case were sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge John Walter. Former Beverly Hills eye doctor Steven Cooperman, who initially proffered details about the scheme back in 1999 during an unrelated case and kicked the investigation into high gear, received four months in jail and a $40,000 fine. In a separate hearing, attorney Paul Selzer was sentenced to two years probation, $250,000 in fines, and 1,000 hours of community service for his part in funneling payments. During Selzer's sentencing Judge Walter said, "You have a life's work end up in a criminal court, having sentence imposed on you. It's a tragedy."
