Death Penalty Cases Can't Be Tried on the Cheap

That's the title of Cynthia Tucker's OpEd column in today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  LINK Brian Nichols, accused of killing four people after a March 2005 jail break, has been blamed for nearly bankrupting the state's indigent defense fund, established a few years ago to ensure that poor criminal defendants get decent lawyers. And, indeed, Nichols' death-penalty defense has cost nearly $2 million so far ? and the trial hasn't even begun. Understandably, Nichols doesn't elicit much sympathy. Still, there is something troubling about the rush to execute accused criminals on the cheap. If the state of Georgia insists on carrying out the ultimate penalty, it should be prepared to pay the price to make sure the defendant has received a fair trial...continue to full post
