Move over Cox, Bok, Gorman and Finkin, there is a new labor law text in town. It is Labor Law Collective Bargaining in a Free Society (6th Ed. 2009) by the late Timothy J. Heinsz, Dennis Nolan and Richard Bales. I received a review copy and it is not even up on West's web site yet.

Actually, this is a continuation of the classic text by the late Kurt Hanslow that had become useless since it was not updated in some time. This edition is like a brand new edition. What I like about it is that it touches on other areas of labor law such as the right to strike in the public sector and timely topics such as whether employee blogging is concerted activity under Section 7.

The book has all of the leading cases with many 2008 cites. What I like most about the book, however, is that the cases are edited and relatively short. Cox, the leading labor law casebook is just too advanced for most law students. It is full of law review cites and lengthy notes. It is more like a treatise. That is why the few times I have taught labor law, I used the Estreicher book. I now have a tough choice about which book to use.
