ADVERTISEMENTS

Many thanks for those who sent their congratulations.  I am super excited and cannot wait to be sworn in.

Working at the law office has opened my eyes about what private practice is like.  Plastered on my wall are cases with impending Statutes of Limitations.  Every other day is a circus as I juggle my caseload of non-responsive clients and over-zealous clients.  My days are stretching longer, with the past two workdays lasting 11 hours in the office.

A typical day begins with an 8:30 a.m. shot of caffeine accompanied by a slice of meatball sandwich. Yes, you read that correctly.  Somewhere in between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., I would take a short 15 minute lunch break and continue working on the complaints.  I guess my job describe is best described as “Complaint Mill.”  My goal is to play detective, tell a (legal) story, and pray for damages. Milk and cookie, anyone?

I really do not mind the long days.  In fact, I enjoy thinking.  I write a few drafts here and there, though most of my ideas are in my head.  How do I match the facts to the causes of action?  What did the client not say in the facts but could be inferred?  What facts are unnecessary and irrelevant to the complaint, as it detracts from the central issues?

On a good day I would draft 2-3 correspondence letters and submit them for approval, and complete two Complaints for review.  On a bad day I would draft several letters without finishing any Complaint.  I am aiming for more good days and less bad days.
