With that one jump Beamon became the first man to reach both 28 and 29 feet, and the word span style="font-style: italic;"Beamonesque/span was born -- meaning a spectacular event. We'd describe Siemens' $800 million a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/2008/12/final-settlements-for-siemens.html"span style="font-weight: bold;"settlement/span/a on Monday of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations as Beamonesque, considering that it surpassed the existing FCPA settlement record by $755.9 million.br /br /Before Siemens, a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Baker%20Hughes"span style="font-weight: bold;"Baker Hughes/span/a' April 2007 payment of $44.1 million (including penalties and disgorgement) was the biggest in an FCPA case. Baker Hughes, we think, won't be sorry to relinquish the top spot on the settlement list since being there gets you mentioned in the press about as often as Madonna.br /br /Among other notable settlements, a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Willbros"span style="font-weight: bold;"Willbros/span/a paid $32.3 million in May this year and a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Chevron"span style="font-weight: bold;"Chevron's/span/a violations related to the U.N.'s a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Oil%20For%20Food"span style="font-weight: bold;"oil for food program/span/a cost it $30 million last yeara href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Oil%20For%20Food"span style="font-weight: bold;"/span/a. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Titan"span style="font-weight: bold;"Titan Corporation/span/a held the record after it paid $28.5 million in 2005 for its FCPA settlement. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Vetco"span style="font-weight: bold;"Vetco's /span/aresolution cost it $26 million in 2007 and a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Lockheed"span style="font-weight: bold;"Lockheed/span/a paid $24.8 million in 1994, the biggest case of its time. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/York%20International"span style="font-weight: bold;"York International/span/a spent $22 million last year to end its enforcement action. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Statoil"span style="font-weight: bold;"Statoil/span/a was close behind in 2006, paying $21 million. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/AB%20Volvo"span style="font-weight: bold;"AB Volvo's/span/a 2008 case settled for $19.6 million, and a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/ABB"span style="font-weight: bold;"ABB's/span/a 2004 violations cost it $16.4 million. a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Schnitzer"span style="font-weight: bold;"Schnitzer Steel /span/aagreed to pay $15.2 million in 2006 and a href="http://fcpablog.blogspot.com/search/label/Flowserve"span style="font-weight: bold;"Flowserve/span/a $10.5 million this year.br /br /Bob Beamon's great leap stood as a world record for 23 years and earned him a postage stamp in Burundi (pictured above). We're fairly sure Siemens won't be appearing soon on any postage stamps, but it could hold the FCPA settlement record for a very long time.br /___________br /br /Our thanks to Joe Hixson for helping assemble the settlement data in this post. He's with the strategic communications firm a href="http://www.abmac.com/index.html"span style="font-weight: bold;"The Abernathy MacGregor Group Inc./span/a, which has represented some very well-known companies in connection with FCPA enforcement actions. Despite Joe's help, any mistakes in what's written above are all ours.br /.img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheFCPABlog/~4/488333957" height="1" width="1"/
