Salmonella Scare: Peanut Paste In Dog Biscuits To Energy Bars

The nation's salmonella scare is changing the focus from peanut butter to peanut paste found in a variety of products from dog biscuits to energy bars. Consumers are advised to avoid these products and return them to the store for a refund. 

Peanut Corporation of America provides peanut paste to a variety of companies nationwide. A  FDA and CDC analysis has confirmed the source of the outbreak and peanut butter and paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) of Blakely, Georgia.

Health officials now say that 485 people are reporting sickness from salmonella found in 43 states.

Consumers are asked to avoid all products that contain peanuts as a precaution. Peanut butter sold in jars in not included, with the exception of the recalled Parnell's Pride and King Nut brands.

Dog Biscuits

PetSmart is voluntarily recalling seven of its Great Choice dog Biscuit products. They contain peanut paste, the same paste made by Peanut Corporation of America that has been identified as the source of salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste made at the Blakely, Georgia facility.

No cases of illness have been linked to the dog biscuits. But customers are advised to not feed them to your dog and return them to PetSMart for a refund or exchange.  The items include:

Energy Bars

Nature's Path is recalling Optimum Energy Peanut Butter Energy Bars because of a possible health risk.  The bars were made using peanut paste from the Georgia plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America. The affected bars are marked with the BEST BEFORE DATE OF 01OCT09A. The bars come in 2 oz sizes. No illnesses have been linked to the Nature's Path energy bars, so the voluntary recall is a precaution.

Cookie Dough

Country Maid Inc. is recalling its 2 pound packages of Classic Breaks Peanut Butter Cookie Dough. Again the paste used to make the dough comes from Peanut Corporation of America, though a contaminated batch has not been identified. The recalled dough is sold through fundraising groups, often by children. Salmonella can result in fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting and may be severe in those who are very young or very old.  The dough was distributed to fundraising groups between October 6 and January 9.

Cookies and Bars

Evening Rise Bread Co. of McCall, Idaho has issued a voluntary recall for its Peanut Butter Cookies and Peanut Butter Bars. The ingredients came from Peanut Corporation of America. No illnesses have been reported. The cookies and bars come in individually packaged clear cellophane bags.

Cliff Bars - Luna Bars

They are popular among health oriented people, but Clif Bar on Monday announced a voluntary recall of Clif and Luna branded bars that contain peanut butter. The only ones affected are listed below.
