What is with jewelry saleswomen?

By Lindsay

ADVERTISEMENTS
For some reason, I've never had this problem with jewelry salesmen.

I was looking at some (cheap) sapphire rings today at a jewelry store in the mall. I mentioned that I actually like the darker sapphires even though I'd heard that the lighter the color the more valuable the sapphire. She sort of stopped in her tracks and gave me a look that said "and you believed that?" Then she shook her head and said that actually, the lighter ones are not as valuable if they're too light. When that didn't seem to work, she then said "well, the darker ones are... reasonable" and proceeded to tell me about her $17,000 sapphire ring that's a nice, beautiful medium blue. I said, for some reason, "Well, I'm in law school now. maybe when I graduate I'll be able to afford that, but for now, I like the darker sapphires".

That was a mistake. Not for me, but for her.

She then asked "so you're ok with hearing all those lawyer jokes?

I tried to joke with her, saying "well, I grew up as a blond, so I'm kind of used to it already. Now, I'll just get blond jokes AND lawyer jokes!"

She said something about how when she was growing up, being a lawyer was a noble thing, but now people make fun of it. Somehow that led to me telling her that I'm a nurse now. You know what she said to that?

"So you're going from helping people to... not helping people?"

That was the moment in which she had sealed the deal, and kissed her commission goodbye.

Several months ago, I was shopping for a claddagh ring. I went into Naser at the Mall of NH, but didn't love any of the rings. As I tried to explain this to the saleswoman, she actually looked at me and said pointedly "a claddagh ring's a claddagh ring".

That was when I went across the way into Belden's, where I bought a unique, stunning claddagh ring. I never knew gold could sparkle that way...

What were these women thinking?
