: Illinois Nursing Home Abuse BlogOffice Starts Training Program on Elder Abuse
By Levin & Perconti
In one state an attorney general?s office held training sessions to help people recognize elder abuse. About 100 people in fields relating to seniors such as long-term care personnel, nurses, social works and law enforcement officers participated. They wanted to train everyone in law enforcement to recognize elder abuse. Also there needs to be better public awareness to the types of abuses: physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and financial exploitation. Some of the training segments were based on responding to the type of crimes and pointing out the type of crimes to which older people are susceptible. The training came after the arrest of a 42-year-old who was charged with depleting $475,000 from a 90-year-old blind man?s bank account to pay of his mortgage. Police said the 42-year-old man encouraged the man to move his money from one bank to another. There was additional money that came up missing from the victim?s home.
