: Legal Pad | LAState workers' salary cap proposal moves to the next level
By Richard Binder
State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino has introduced a bill that would freeze the pay of state employees making more than $150,000 a year. It was approved unanimously on Wednesday by the Assembly Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security Committee and goes next to the Appropriations Committee.
The proposal, outlined in Assembly Bill 53, would impose a two-year salary cap on about 785 state employees. The bill would extend to the highest paid workers in the legislative, executive and judicial branches.
Portantino said he was inspired to take action after reading news reports of big pay hikes in the University of California and the California State University systems, especially in light of a multibillion-dollar state budget deficit.
The proposed law would not apply to Portantino, who earns about $116,000 a year.
If signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger, the bill would take effect next January.
