Rejection by Texas Senate of Unqualified Nominee Was Welcome

That's the title of an editorial in today's Beaumont Enterprise on the rejection of Shanda Perkin' nomination s to the Board of Pardons and Paroles.  LINKFinally, the Texas Senate remembered it is not supposed to serve as a rubber stamp for the governor or anyone. In a rare, bipartisan rebuke, the Senate rejected one of Gov. Rick Perry's nominees to the state Board of Pardons and Parole. The vote was not even close - 27-4. Fifteen Republicans were in the "no" column.The Senate refused to confirm Shanda Perkins of Burleson for an excellent reason. She is not qualified. She has no college degree and no experience in criminal justice. Those are big drawbacks on a board that decides, among other things, whether to recommend clemency in a death penalty cases...continue to full post
