1st Cir. grills both sides in hearing over protected status of tax accrual work papers
"At an en banc hearing, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit picked apart arguments by government and Textron Inc. lawyers in a contentious case about whether the work-product privilege protects companies' so-called tax accrual work papers. It was not clear from the questioning how the court will rule".
7th Circuit declines to overturn local handgun bans
"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit declined to overturn the bans on most handguns that were enacted by the cities of Chicago and suburban Oak Brook, saying that it's an issue for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide."
7th Circuit ruling agrees with Sotomayor on Second Amendment
"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ruled Tuesday that the Second Amendment right to bear arms cannot be held to restrict state gun control laws until the Supreme Court rules that the right applies to the states. As a result, the ruling in NRA v. Chicago will likely give Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor some much-needed political cover against criticism of a similar Second Amendment ruling she joined in on the 2nd Circuit earlier this year."
These lawyers have no borders
"During the mid 1990s, attorney Christina M. Storm went looking for opportunities to do pro bono legal work abroad. Storm, a litigator who is a partner in Byrne & Storm in Hartford, Conn., had developed mediation skills that she figured could be put to use in other countries, but she had a hard time finding organizations doing international pro bono work with which she could volunteer. Frustrated with the lack of options, in 2000 she founded Lawyers Without Borders, an organization that connects attorneys with pro bono projects in Africa and elsewhere."
Munger Tolles, O'Melveny collaborate on child care
"When Kate Anderson returned to her job at Los Angeles-based Munger, Tolles & Olson following the birth of her twin girls, she was lucky to have family who helped out with child care. Other attorneys at the firm, she said, were on their own finding child care for their kids. So she began looking into how the firm could provide child care to its attorneys and staff. On June 1, Munger Tolles & Olson and O'Melveny & Myers started work preparing a new joint child care and early education center in downtown L.A. Scheduled to open in the fall, the center will house 88 children, from infants to pre-kindergarteners."
