: Kentucky Law BlogLAWYERS WANTED, LAWYERS NEEDED - Kentucky Disaster Legal Relief
By Michael Stevens
Colleagues -- In May, severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, and mudslides devastated many residents of the Commonwealth. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has asked for the implementation of disaster legal services in Kentucky in response to these natural disasters. In conjunction with the ABA Young Lawyers Division, we are asking for your assistance in making your services available for those in need.
Presently, FEMA has designated residents of the following counties as being eligible for disaster legal services: Breathitt, Floyd, Owsley, and Pike.
While Kentucky attorneys in those areas may be most familiar with the destruction, attorneys anywhere in the state can volunteer to help - not just those in the impacted areas. Some of the expected issues will involve life, medical and property insurance as well as access to government benefits. A toll-free number has been established for victims of this disaster to call (877-499-7698), and in the next few days, media outlets will be notified and the toll-free number will be distributed. Callers should identify that they are seeking disaster-related legal assistance, and those who qualify for assistance will be referred to a legal aid organization or matched with Kentucky lawyers who have volunteered to provide free legal help. In addition, information for victims will be posted at http://www.kydisasterlegalrelief.com.
Your assistance is needed. To volunteer, please contact Scott Laufenberg, the ABA Young Lawyers Division Representative for District 16 (Kentucky & Tennessee), at slaufenberg@kscvlaw.com, or by phone at (270) 782-8160.
Thanks for your help.
