: Mike Conaway's BlogInside with an Intern
Hi, my name is Alexa Nichols and I am from San Angelo, Texas. I am working for Congressman Conaway?s D.C. office this summer. I am a junior at Angelo State University majoring in Biology with a minor in Spanish. At ASU I am involved in the University Honors Program, College Republicans, and Baptist Student Ministry.
I have been working as an intern for 3 weeks and have already learned so much about the legislative process. I have been able to observe committee hearings and attend lectures specifically for interns. Sometimes it seems surreal passing by media crews, protestors, and security officers on my way to the office.
Working in the office and being able to see the day-to-day operations has been very interesting. I was initially concerned that being in a wheelchair might prohibit me from doing some of the necessary work. However, the staff has helped me find ways to do everything that is expected of interns. On a typical day I distribute newspapers, review faxes, sort mail, and input constituent information into the computer system. Occasionally, I give a tour of the Capitol to constituents that are visiting Washington.
I have also enjoyed sightseeing on the weekends. I have been to the monuments and several museums. My favorite trip so far was to Monticello and Mount Vernon. I highly recommend the drive to these two historic estates.
After graduation I plan on attending law school and hope to work with a ?think tank? dealing with bioethical issues.
I am looking forward to the rest of my internship and am so appreciative to have this experience.- Alexa Nichols, Intern for Congressman Mike Conaway
