The State of Iowa Safe Boating Course is taught by members of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 4.The last class was held at the Lake Red Rock Visitors Center near Pella, Iowa. They will also inspect your boat.

Iowa Boating License Overview

Boat Iowa is the official boating safety course of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Taking this safe boating course will allow you to get your Iowa boating license online. You must be at least 12 years of age to take the online boating test.

4. Inattention to safety issues
5. Inattention to driving and what's in front of you
6. Horseplay

Study the Iowa safe boating course material and take one or more Practice Tests—free of charge.

Take the Iowa Boating Exam for $15, collected online. When you pass, you may instantly print out a temporary certificate. You may also purchase your permanent Iowa boating safety education certificate (for an additional $5 state fee) online, which will then be mailed to you by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources within 3-4 weeks.

What's the difference between a boating license and a boating safety education certificate?

What it's called depends on your state, but it represents the same thing—proof of completion of an approved boater education course. Most boaters don't know the exact name of the official certification for their state, so they commonly refer to it as a boating license.
