What I Learned (Could Have, Did Not) in Law School

By shell

ADVERTISEMENTS

What I learned in law school

  • Appellate brief, procedure, research
  • Legal memorandum
  • Blackletter law for  Property, Constitutional Law, Contract, Torts, Criminal Law
  • Statutory courses (health, employment)
  • Common law and codes (criminal procedure, civil procedure, UCC/secured transactions)
  • Ethics

What I didn’t learn in law school (mostly practical skills)

  • Interactive skills: client screening, interview
  • Investigative skills
  • Billing and fees
  • Trial procedure & techniques, discovery process, filing procedure, deposition
  • Writing motions
I could have taken as optional courses: trial technique, deposition & discovery, matrimonial billing, legal writing for motions.  Yet I did not take these classes because I need to take some “bar courses” (basic subjects that will appear on the Multi-State Bar Examination) and I need to satisfy my dual degree requirement.

There are certain things I did on my own to enrich my law school experience: student government, moot court board, moot court competition, study abroad, executive board leadership).

Professional development training: health internship, office assistant, summer law clerk).

Looking back in the past 2-1/2 years, it seems like I have accomplished all the things I had set out to do and more.  I am satisfied with the efforts I have devoted and I thank my lucky stars that my family have been 110% supportive.

As much as I complain about law school in general (and Vikingland law school from time to time), I am glad I chose this school.  Yes, there will be five-digit debt when I graduate, but it is certainly better than six-digit debt.
