Up and Down and Up Some More

ADVERTISEMENTS
My summer has been full of ups and downs. Right after the total high of law school graduation I had some work drama that threw me for a loop and put me in a pretty good funk to start off bar prep. Then bar prep itself has been up and down. I go between feeling like this exam is totally manageable, minimum competency, to feeling like it is absolutely impossible and that I haven't put in enough effort, focus, or work to pass it. I decided around 11am that I'd had enough already today and needed to clear my head, so I grabbed my iPod and headed outside for a walk. A pretty major street divides Useless University in half. The law school is on the North end of campus, and while we have a beautiful building, the North side of campus just isn't as pretty as the South side. The South side is full of nostalgia, so many undergrad memories it was nice to walk around over there. The garden area is also one of my favorites because in the summer time the fountains have gorgeous water plants and it's a pretty quiet place tucked back away from the street noise:

I plopped down in the middle of the huge lawn, surrounded by the water garden and took a nap for an hour in the warm sun. It was quite possibly the best decision I've made this summer. After recharging my batteries I headed back over to my spot in the law library. My new email icon notification was on my desktop when I restarted my computer so I checked it, and literally almost fell out of my chair when I read the first email in my box:

Useless Dicta, we would like to bring you back after the bar exam while you await your exam results to work in your previous position in the Felony division. If you would like to do that, please let me know what date you would be returning.

Thanks,

Internship Program Director

After all of the mixed things that went down in May I literally almost danced for joy right in the middle of the law library!!!! It's not a permanent offer and there is no guarantee I'll still be employed come October, but it's at least a couple of months worth of money and it's back in my same department which I absolutely loved. Frankly, if they would let me just be a research person as a licensed attorney in the felony division I'd probably be a pretty happy camper. The DAs that work in that division are fabulous, the cases are super interesting, I get to handle some high profile stuff, and I literally learn something new every single day. Misdemeanor and traffic court on the other hand (which is where every new DA starts and spends at least 2 if not 3 years) is a lot like high school with the cattiness and drama that goes on between the young DAs, it'd be a dream to get to skip that crap all together, but at least I get a couple more months in "adult land" before having to worry about whether I'll get a full time DA job and have to go back to high school.

As awesome as it is to find out I have a job for a couple of months and as great as it is to get such good news during bar prep, I can't help but wonder if they are going to stick another knife in me and twist it before yanking it out come October. I'm definitely not going to sit around waiting for them to offer me a job. When I get back from my vacay I'll be putting 110% effort into job searching . There is a part of me that would really like nothing more than to be able to give my two weeks notice before bar results and move onto bigger and better things (hopefully as a DA in another district), but we'll see.

Alright, now that I've been distracted for a few hours and have gotten NOTHING done today for bar prepping, it's back to work I go........
