Carrion police shooting settled for $1.5 million

San Bernardino County has tentatively agreed to pay $1.5 million to Elio Carrion, a U.S. Air Force serviceman who was unarmed when a sheriff's deputy shot him following a high-speed chase three years ago.

If approved by the county Board of Supervisors later this month, the settlement would effectively close the book on drawn-out legal proceedings surrounding the Jan. 29, 2006, shooting that sparked national debate when it was captured on videotape off a darkened Chino street. The agreement comes just days before the two parties were to begin a civil trial in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

The settlement will be considered for approval at the Aug. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting. County spokesman David Wert said if approved, some of the award would be covered by insurance.
