WTO A/V Products Case ? No, There Really Isn?t Any News Today

By Stan

ADVERTISEMENTS

China said on Monday it will challenge a World Trade Organisation ruling against its restrictions on imported films, books and audio-visual products, continuing its sparring with Washington over trade access. (Reuters)

Just for the record, there has been no news on this case. Remember that the WTO panel ruling included several pages of line items, decisions on about 137 individual complaints (well, I didn’t count them up, so 137 might be a slight exaggeration).

Therefore, China could file on the basis of any one of those line items and still be appealing the case. Announcing that they are preparing documents for an appeal tells us nothing; actually it doesn’t even confirm that China will actually lodge those documents with the WTO.

In other words, I would not take any of this too seriously until and unless something gets filed.
