By Philip Brooks

ADVERTISEMENTS

General Patent Corporation (GPC), a leading patent licensing and enforcement firm, announced today [August 18, 2009] on behalf of its client, Digital Technology Licensing LLC (DTL), that it has licensed DTL's key cell phone patent to eleven (11) phone companies.

DTL owns US Patent No. 5,051,799 titled ?Digital Output Transducer.? This patented technology covers Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) codec and other cellular communication standards and is used to assure backward compatibility of cell phone handsets and base stations. Other applications of this patented technology include Bluetooth devices.

The eleven regional phone companies that have licensed the DTL patent are:

    * Copper Valley Wireless, Inc. of Valdez, Alaska

    * Silver Star Telephone Company, Inc. of Freedom, Wyoming

    * SKT Wireless, LLC of Clearwater, Kansas

    * Etex Communications, LP d/b/a Etex Wireless of Gilmer, Texas

    * Syringa Wireless, LLC of Pocatello, Idaho

    * NTCH, Inc. d/b/a Cleartalk of Hermosa Beach, California

    * Thumb Cellular LLC of Pigeon, Michigan

    * South Central Communications, Inc. of Escalante, Utah

    * Texas RSA 7B3, L.P. d/b/a Peoples Wireless of Quitman, Texas

    * Panhandle Telecommunication Systems, Inc. of Guymon, Oklahoma

    * Inland Cellular Telephone Company of Roslyn, Washington

All of these licensees are paying the DTL standard royalty rate of 0.7% of cell phone service revenue.

?We are very pleased to see that cell phone service providers are willing to pay for the technology they are utilizing,? said Paul Lerner, General Patent?s Sr. Vice President and General Counsel. ?Non-exclusive licenses under the DTL patent are available to other cell phone service providers at our standard royalty rate of 0.7% on non-discriminatory terms.?

General Patent Corporation represents DTL in the licensing and enforcement of the ?799 Patent. DTL brought patent infringement lawsuits against Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless (now known as AT&T Mobility), T-Mobile, Sprint and other companies. GPC previously announced that all lawsuits except for Verizon, Sprint and Kyocera had been settled. Aside from the service providers, General Patent had previously licensed the DTL patent to leading cell phone manufacturers including Nokia, Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG.
