Lawyers to DirecTV: stop the surprise fees

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Lawyers for California customers of The DirecTV Group Inc. filed a preliminary injunction motion on Sept. 21 in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking to stop the satellite television service from automatically withdrawing early cancellation fees from customer bank accounts and credit cards without their knowledge or consent.

The motion came in a lawsuit alleging that DirecTV fails to adequately disclose the fees when customers sign up or change their service. The suit further claims that DirecTV does not inform customers that their terms of service usually run between 18 and 24 months.

Early cancellation fees can range up to $480. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for Nov. 17.
