Al Franken, the KBR Rape Amendment, and Scapegoating

By Andy Hoffman

ADVERTISEMENTS
Apparently there?s a nasty case of ?scapegoat-itis? afflicting several U.S. Senators of late?

Politico is now reporting that a handful of senators who voted against the Al Franken amendment (which forbids the government from doing business with military contractors that refuse employee/rape victims the right to sue in court) are furious about the heat they?ve been taking in the aftermath.  And who do they say is to blame?  Why, Al Franken, of course!

Said Senator John Thune (R-SD) of Franken: ?I think hopefully he?ll settle down and do the kind of the serious work of legislating that?s important to Minnesota.?  Never mind that every female member of the GOP voted for the amendment?apparently thinking rape victims? right to sue was plenty ?serious.?

?I think it would be helpful for Senator Franken to come forward and say, ?I?m not suggesting that anybody who votes for my amendment is indifferent to crimes against women or anybody else,?? said Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who also voted against the amendment.

Or here?s another idea?maybe the scapegoat crowd should have joined the 68 other senators who voted to protect rape victims? rights, and conveyed that message themselves!
