: The University of Chicago Law School Faculty BlogDean Levmore Early Career Quiz -- ANSWERS
Here are the answers to the brief quiz I posted at the end of last quarter, concerning an article that the student newspaper at the University of Virginia Law School published on September 12, 1980 about the newest professor there, Saul Levmore.
1. What was the headline of the Virginia Law Weekly article about the newly arrived Saul Levmore?
A. "Young Professor is the Newest Economist on Faculty."
B. "Professor Levmore Loves Games, Puzzles, and Teaching."
C. "Wunderkind Levmore Supplies Demand for Didactic Dynamo."
ANSWER: Our own Professor Brian Leiter and Case Western Professor Robert Strassfeld both guessed B, but the answer is C. That's the one title I am not clever enough to have made up.
2. According to the article, how old was Levmore when he began teaching at Virginia?
A. 27.
B. 26.
C. 25.
ANSWER: Professors Leiter and Strassfeld both guessed A and they are correct, but I'm sure they would have guessed Saul was younger if they didn't already know how old Saul is now.
3. Which is the actual quotation in the article attributed to Levmore?
A. "I guess I just like economics a lot, more than grabbing a microscope and looking at amoebae."
B. "I guess I just like schools a lot, more than going to Utah and working on a commune."
C. "I guess I just like puzzles a lot, more than sitting in front of the tube and watching five, nine, or eleven men toss a ball."
ANSWER: Professor Leiter guessed 3-C, while Professor Strassfeld guessed 3-A. Perhaps I should write questions for the College Board because the answer is 3-B.
A. Administrative dean of a residential college.
B. Chess and economics tutor.
C. Pizza deliveryman.
ANSWER: Professor Leiter guessed B, but Professor Strassfeld gave the correct answer: A. Dean Levmore didn't get the job at Chicago just because he was good at building fountains.
A. Alinsky.
B. David.
C. Xerxes.
ANSWER: Professor Leiter guessed A. It would be interesting if Dean Levmore's namesake were the Chicago labor organizer Saul Alinsky, but that is not correct. Law student Mike commented that Dean Levmore's middle name is Xerxes, while Professor Strassfeld guessed C. Oddly, Professor Strassfeld is correct but Mike is technically incorrect. "According to the article," Dean Levmore's middle name is Xerxes, so the answer is C, but the article is wrong, so Mike is wrong as well. Saul Levmore has no middle name.
Welcome back to the fourth floor Saul!
