Tanker Truck Explosion Closes LI Expressway, Kills Brooklyn Man

By Paul Napoli

A Saturday morning accident on the Long Island Expressway involving a tanker truck has left one person dead and another injured.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the LIE, between Melville and Plainview. The tanker truck was delivering 15,000 gallons of gasoline from Brooklyn to Long Island when the driver attempted to pass a Dodge Neon driven by Stephanie Medina, 29, of Bayonne, NJ that had slowed due to mechanical difficulties. The tanker truck tried to veer around Medina's Dodge as she slowed to pull onto the shoulder, but it struck the small car, overturned and exploded into flames.

A passing motorist pulled Medina from her car and guided her to safety. An ambulance transported her to University Medical Center in East Meadow, where they treated her for non-life-threatening injuries and later released her.

The driver of the tanker truck, identified only as a 50-year-old man from Brooklyn pending family notification, was unable to escape the wreckage. Kittery Transport of Maine operated the truck.

Emergency crews fought to put out the blaze for three hours, spraying it with foam.

The westbound lanes of the LIE reopened about 6 p.m., but the eastbound lanes remain closed.

Commercial trucking accidents can occur due to a variety of causes. On roadways occupied mostly by passenger vehicles, commercial trucking accidents can cause very severe property damage, life-threatening injuries and even death. If you are injured or a loved one killed in a trucking accident, you need to contact a personal injury attorney who is experienced in trucking accidents as soon as possible. Visit www.NBRLawFirm.com or call 1-888-529-4669 to discuss your case and find out the best course of action to ensure that you get the medical care you need and the compensation you deserve.
