: Practical Paralegalism"Unique" Funding of Paralegal Staff Gets DA in Trouble
By Lynne DeVenny
ADVERTISEMENTS
The Denver Post has published an interesting story about 18th Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers' alleged irregular funding of "her prosecution of a high-profile murder case."When facing questions about her spending in the case, which is still pending, Chambers told the court that one of the paralegals working on the case was "a unique employee paid in a unique way."
District Judge Stanley Brinkley took issue with her choice of adjectives, instead describing the payment arrangement as illegal.
In prosecuting Perez and Bueno, she billed the Department of Corrections for all expenses and reimbursed her own office for at least $91,648 in staffing and office costs in 2007 that should have been reimbursed to Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, where by law she gets her funding.
Chambers plans to appeal the court's finding that "she broke state law by creating a new funding source and sidestepping counties' budget approval."
I'd like to hear more about the job duties and employment arrangement of that "unique" paralegal employee - and his or her employment status with Chambers' office.
