: Open CongressThe Week In Review
By Sunlight Foundation & Participatory Politics Foundation
The new jobs numbers provide plenty of opportunities for both Democrats and Republicans. If anything, they give lawmakers something to talk about at their Easter recess town halls besides health care and offshore drilling. While you eagerly wait in line to be the first person at the White House Easter egg roll, check out what we’ve been up to this week at OpenCongress:
- A revised cybersecurity bill (S.773) with a modified Internet 'kill-switch' provision has advanced in the Senate.
- Health insurers promise not to exploit a loophole in the Affordable Care Act that would have allowed them to deny coverage to uninsured children with pre-existing conditions.
- Sen. Bob Corker [R, TN], the lone Republican in the Senate offering Democrats the hope of a bipartisan financial regulation bill, is playing hardball with them.
- House Republican Leader John Boehner [R, OH-8] doesn’t think President Obama wants to "drill, baby, drill' enough.
- Sen. John McCain’s [R-AZ] threat to defund health care reform pending Republican majorities in Congress could spark a high-stakes game of chicken with schools, the unemployed and low-income citizens in the balance.
- The Wall Street Journal calls the elimination of a corporate tax deduction for prescription drugs a 'wholesale destruction of wealth and capital.'
- 16.500 armed IRS agents won’t come to arrest you for failing to purchase health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
- Speaking of health care, take a look at how OpenCongress covered the health care debate. If you have any comments, criticisms or suggestion, please tell us.
Thanks again for the great participation on the site this week and for all your great comments. Remember to become a fan of OpenCongress on Facebook and to follow us on Twitter at @OpenCongress and on Google Buzz.
