Opening Day (or really night)

By Dan Markel, Ethan Leib, Rick Garnett, Matt Bodie, Paul Horwitz , Steve Vladeck, and Orly Lobel

ADVERTISEMENTS

I suspect like many of us, one of my favorite things about teaching is the rhythm and cycles of academic life.  I love that we have breaks to catch up on reading and focus on scholarship in a more uninterrupted way.  And although it is nice when things are relatively quiet over the summer, I really, really look forward to meeting new energetic students each fall and reconnecting with returning students.

This is one of the things I love about sports as well.  I love that there is always the beginning of another season to be excited about.  I just returned from Opening Night at Angel Stadium (for those wondering, the Angels beat the Twins 6-3).  I am a life long Angels fan (I know, kind of embarrassing), and although I don't get to as many games as I used to, I always try to make Opening Day (or night).  Although for most of my life the Angels were pretty bad, at the beginning of every season I always truly believe they will win the World Series.

Which leads me to ask, what is your favorite sports memory?  For me, it isn't even close.  In 2002, literally just off the plane from the AALS Meat Market, I was with my dad at Angel Stadium watching the Angels beat the Giants in Game 7 of the World Series.  It was one of the only moments in those hectic couple of months I did not really care where I would get a teaching job, or if I would get one at all.
