Senate Unanimously Confirms Appeals Court Judge

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Senate voted 98-0 to confirm President Obama’s nomination of federal district Judge Denny Chin (photo at right) to the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as it proceeded to reduce a backlog of nominees.

Chin, a native of Hong Kong, will hold a distinction as the only active Asian-American judge sitting on a federal appeals court, according to an article in the National Law Journal.

Meanwhile the nomination of Goodwin Liu, a Berkley law professor, to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals continued to draw comment. Liu was the subject of a stormy confirmation hearing last week (see Gavel Grab).

In an editorial, the Los Angeles Times pronounced Liu’s views “well within any definition of ‘mainstream’ legal thought,” noted that the American Bar Association found him well qualified, and urged his confirmation. You can keep updated on judicial nominations through Gavel Grab and Justice at Stake’s judicial nomination news page.
