: New York City Personal Injury LawyerReport Urges FDA To Regulate Sodium Intake
By Chrissie Cole
A newly released report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggests national action is needed to reduce the sodium content of foods which will in turn make a significant impact toward reducing the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events for Americans.
One in three U.S. adults – nearly 75 million people 20 or older – is affected by hypertension (high blood pressure). While an additional 50 million adults suffer from pre-hypertension.
Patients who are diagnosed with high blood pressure are at an increased risk of developing kidney disease, blindness, heart attacks, strokes, and hardening of arteries.
A major contributor to high blood pressure is excessive sodium in every day foods
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not currently working on regulations to regulate sodium at this time, the agency plans to review recommendations made by the IOM report and will work with other federal agencies and consumer groups to support a sodium reduction strategy.
