Supreme Announcement Coming Next Week?

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

There are no leaks yet about who President Obama will tap as his next Supreme Court nominee, but an expert court-watcher says an announcement will come early next week–unless, of course, plans change.

That was the handicapping of SCOTUSblog founder Tom Goldstein in a post Thursday. Speculation has continued to focus on the four people whom Obama is known to have interviewed: Solicitor General Elena Kagan and appeals court Judges Diane Wood, Merrick Garland and Sidney Thomas.

In the latest media coverage, the New York Times profiled Judge Thomas as a “long shot” for the court “who has [a] reputation for compassion and persuasion.” Another Times article reviewed a new documentary film, “Advise and Dissent,” chronicling pitched battles over Supreme Court nominations in 2005 and 2006.

Kagan attended a judicial conference in Ohio where retiring Justice John Paul Stevens made remarks, according to a post in USA Today’s The Oval blog and a Washington Post article.
