: The GavelResponse Eyed to CO Anti-Retention Drive
By Peter Hardin
In response to an initiative to unseat four Colorado Supreme Court justices this year, former Colorado Justice Jean Dubofsky and a state Democratic Party lawyer are putting together a non-profit group.
The group is intended to to “educate voters about the judicial performance evaluation process in light of an anti-retention campaign led by Clear The Bench,” according to an article in Law Week Colorado.
Colorado has a merit selection system. The governor appoints judges from a list of nominees provided by a judicial nominating commission, and judges stand for retention at least two years after their appointment. Throughout the state, judicial performance commission give voters information about the performance of judicial retention candidates.
A group called Clear the Bench Colorado is seeking to unseat four justices in retention elections. The justices are completing 10-year terms. You can learn more about the controversy from Gavel Grab.
