The Georgetown Law Faculty Blog inter alia contains postings from John Mikhail, who specializes in the confluence of moral theory and law. In an age where religious fundamentalism is increasingly raising its ugly, reactionary head, the discussion of moral cognition and its relationship to legal theory is, at the least, quite timely. Our own opinion of mainstream linguistics is not very high, so that we find it hard to imagine that moral grammar would have much of value to teach us in law. We quote from the Abstract to Mikhail's article, Universal Moral Grammar: Theory, Evidence, and the Future, to give a snapshot glimpse of this field:

"[Noam] Chomsky emphasized that rigorous formulation in linguistics is not merely a pointless technical exercise but an important diagnostic and heuristic tool, because only by pushing a precise but inadequate formulation to an unacceptable conclusion can we gain a better understanding of the relevant data and of the inadequacy of our existing attempts to explain them. Likewise, Marr warned against making inferences about cognitive systems from neurophysiological findings without "a clear idea about what information needs to be represented and what processes need to be implemented."" [emphasis added]

Chomsky's theories are controversial.

Global Voices is a blog-like project that "aggregates, curates, and amplifies the global conversation online ? shining light on places and people other media often ignore." Global Voices "is a non-profit global citizens? media project founded at Harvard Law School?s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, a research think-tank focused on the Internet?s impact on society."

Grahnlaw is a blog by lawyer Ralf Grahn blogging out of Helsinki, Finland, described as follows: "Euroblog: For a democratic European Union: politics, future and history. Blawg = law blog = legal blog: European and Finnish law." His recent postings concentrate on the EU and Finland.

We might add in this connection that EuroIntelligence.com has an article by Andrew Duff, MEP, on the new Treaty of Lisbon (ToL). The article, True Guide to the Lisbon Treaty, has a short summary of the treaty and the following useful excerpt:

"The Treaty of Lisbon amends the Treaty on European Union (TEU) (essentially the Treaty of Maastricht) and the Treaty establishing the European Community (TEC) (essentially the Treaty of Rome), which is renamed the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). Both treaties have the same legal rank. Even if the new Treaty is no longer overtly a constitutional treaty, it manages to preserve most of the important achievements of the Treaty establishing a Constitution of Europe which was signed in 2004 but never ratified."

Groklaw calls itself "a journalistic enterprise, with interviews, research, and reporting of legal events important to the FOSS [Free and Open Source Software] community, as they unfold, including chronological, day-by-day coverage of the SCO story, beginning on May 16, 2003." The SCO bankruptcy filing last autumn was a major story at e.g. ZDNet, who pointed out that the focus of Groklaw might shift from SCO to other FOSS matters, although current posts are covering the SCO vs. Novell suit.

Guiding Rights Blog is about "Trademarks, Copyright and the Internet, by Mark V.B. Partridge."
A recent posting points out that Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, has sued singer Lennon Murphy about using the name Lennon.
