: National Eminent Domain BlogA Cranbrook Senior Says Farewell
By Alan Ackerman
Thank you for giving my son a wonderful education.
Between my freshman and sophomore year I contemplated transferring to a local public school—which would have been one of the worst decisions of my life. At the time I had a hard time dealing with having an ill parent, but I relied heavily upon school to get through this period.
Mr. Winter, Dean of Boys, was always there for me—even at my lowest times in high school. It is faculty like Mr. Winter that make Cranbrook such a special place. The school does have a large, beautiful campus and everything from an art museum to a Heisman Trophy winner to a real-life periodic table. But the faculty's dedication was the most vital component to my high school career. Only here would lunch staff make watered down smoothies for me when my mouth was wired shut. Only here would all teachers donate to the School Annual Funds – let alone seven years in a row. And only here would the Dean of Boys schedule a mid-summer meeting to convince what was then a somewhat average student to return to school. So as I leave, I would like to say 'adios' to my classmates and friends. I know I will see you again. And most of all, I would like to thank the fantastic faculty. Matthew Ackerman '10 was a Crane-Clarion opinion section editor for 2009-10. He will attend Harvard in the fall.
