Exhibit A in the Upcoming British Petroleum Litigation?

By Bruce Carton

ADVERTISEMENTS
Via Consumerist comes what is sure to be Exhibit A in the Everyone in the World v. British Petroleum litigation. It turns out that in the 1970s, BP actually had its own "BP Offshore Oil Strike" board game in which players race to "explore for oil, build rigs and lay pipelines." The game included the following ominous "hazard card," however: "Blow-out! Rig damaged. Oil slick cleanup costs. Pay $1 million." The post on Consumerist already has some great comments piling up: "Is there a 'Go Directly To Jail' space on the game board?" "God must have been playing that game a few months ago ... and lost." "It should have a community card that says 'In the midst of crisis, you deserve a break. Race your yacht to relax'" So there you have it. Based on this smoking gun, BP will automatically lose at trial, as it knew 30+ years ago that its rig would blow out, but it's damages are capped at $1 million. Case closed.
