Two and a half years after buying a minority stake in Alcon, Novartis closed on the purchase of Nestle's remaining stake and gained control of most the eyecare company. If Novartis succeeds in acquiring the rest, the deal will be Switzerland's largest merger ever at a value of more than $50 billion.
