Bar Panel Recommends Suspension for Ex-U.S. Attorney

By Andrew Ramonas

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Alaska Bar Association Disciplinary Board called for the immediate suspension of a U.S. Attorney from the George H.W. Bush administration, KTUU reported this week.

Wev Shea, who served as Alaska U.S. Attorney from 1990 to 1993, could face a 25-month suspension for an alleged conflict of interest, which stems from his decision to switch clients in a suit between two siblings.

The association urged its disciplinary panel to disbar the former U.S. Attorney or suspend his legal license for four to five years after he allegedly gave false statements and acted unprofessionally in the court. The bar also suggested Shea undergo a mental evaluation.

Shea defended his actions, saying he did not have to honor attorney-client privileges with his initial client because he felt the man broke the law. The former prosecutor said his first client plotted with his lawyers in a fraud scheme.

?I know that you are wondering probably why Wev Shea would do this,” Shea told the television station. “I did it because the conduct is criminal.”

The Alaska Supreme Court will make the final decision on any disciplinary action taken against Shea.
