Curse of the Billy Goat

By Sara

ADVERTISEMENTS

Yesterday’s Daily Disclosure email mentioned the College of Law’s upcoming Sports and Entertainment Law conference and that has us Law Library folks itching to research some sports stats.

Turns out that today is an important day in sports history. On October 6, 1945 a man and his goat were ejected from Wrigley Field during game 4 of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. As the man left he exclaimed “Them Cubs, they aren’t gonna win no more,” and thus began the Curse of the Billy Goat, a legendary explanation for why the Cubs haven’t been in a World Series since. October 6 also marks the day that our very own D-backs swept the Cubs in the National League Division Series in 2007. Quite a day in sports (and goats’) history!

Feeling sporty and want to learn more? Check out some of the Law Library’s resources on sports law. You can also read the text of ballot Proposition 420 (which will be included on the November 2 ballot and asks Mesa voters to keep Cubs spring training in Mesa) on the City of Mesa’s website.
