California Superior Court Judge Kurt Kumli is a candidate to head the Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), Youth Today reported.

Kumli, a former state prosecutor in the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, has reportedly interviewed for the position and would be willing to give up his seat on the state court, the newspaper said.

Speaking at a conference in Kansas City this week, Melodee Hanes, acting Deputy Administrator for Policy in the office, said the White House was close to selecting a nominee.

?All I can tell you is, once again, we?re close,? Hanes said.

The OJJDP is responsible for providing resources and coordination for juvenile justice programs. Jeff Slowikowski, a 20-year veteran of the DOJ, has served as acting Administrator of the office since President Barack Obama took office.

Hanes also told attendees of the conference that Attorney General Eric Holder wants a focus on juvenile justice to “be his legacy.”
