Postal Workers? members (APWU) elected Cliff Guffey as the union?s new president in mail balloting that concluded last week. He has served as APWU vice president since 2001 and succeeds the retiring William Burrus, who held the office since 2001.
Guffey is the union?s fifth president and prior to his election as vice president, he served as the union?s Clerk Craft director. Before joining the APWU on the national level, Guffey was president of APWU?s Oklahoma City Local. He says:
These are tough times for postal workers. But we are committed to fighting to protect our jobs and to strengthen the Postal Service. With the support of our members?and the American people?I am confident we can succeed.
Greg Bell, the union’s Industrial Relations Director for the past 15 years, was elected vice president.
Burrus, who announced his retirement last year, began his postal career in 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio, and served as APWU vice president from 1981 until he was elected president in 2001. Click here to read his farewell column in the American Postal Worker magazine.
