Writing Fellows or Practitioners?

David Horton asks which is to be preferred over at Prawfsblawg for the legal writing class, and he concludes, not unreasonably, that since LRW is the one class in law school that prepares students for litigation, it oughta be staffed by experienced litigators.

I disagree though - I even wrote a comment disagreeing!  I would, though, because I was a fellow at NYU.  It's no exaggeration to say that I wouldn't be in academia without the fellowship.  And fellows can be good things for the academic enterprise.  Law schools don't have graduate students, not many, anyway, and fellows can stand in for that.  That's an unmitigated good - you've got young, hungry people trying to figure out what the cutting edge of scholarship is, and then doing it.  It can only help a faculty, and in social science departments, the best schools have the largest graduate programs.  I see correlation.  Maybe even causation!
