More TV Ads Fly in 2010 Elections

More judicial candidates and supporters are taking to the air as the countdown to Election Day advances.

In Michigan, a TV ad by the campaign of Justice Alton Thomas Davis touts his credentials as a former Detroit public school teacher who will be ?a voice for those who aren?t being heard.?

The ad also promises that as a former prosecutor, Davis ?knows how to hold insurance companies and corporate polluters accountable.?

The message could be seen as taking indirect aim at a fellow justice without mentioning him by name. Justice Davis was appointed to the bench by Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm this year, and Michigan Democrats separately are airing an ad that accuses a Republican Justice, Robert Young Jr., of letting corporate polluters off the hook (see Gavel Grab).

In Alabama, the Virginia-based Center for Individual Freedom supports two Republicans, state Supreme Court Justice Michael Bolin and high court candidate Kelli Wise, with a new ad crediting them ?for protecting Alabama families.?

The ad also slams ?big government liberals and judicial activists? who ?have threatened to politicize Alabama?s Supreme Court for decades.? You can learn more about the Center, a conservative, nonprofit advocacy group, from Gavel Grab. CFIF is among a group of “super spenders” profiled in “The New Politics of Judicial Elections 2000-2009: Decade of Change.”

Ohio Chief Justice Eric Brown, meanwhile, aired a brief TV ad showing him in judicial robes at the bench and lauding his ?experienced leadership with a common sense approach.? He has ?proven experience? and ?Main Street values,? the ad contends.

An ad by the campaign of Judge Robert C. ?Bob? Hunter, an appeals court judge running for the North Carolina Supreme Court, says he has support from the ?vast majority of our law enforcement officers.?

You can check other recent judicial campaign ads by visiting the JAS Judicial Elections 2010 page.
